The Alpaca Place is located in Masterton,
Wairarapa, New Zealand
Nestled east of the Tararua Ranges in the
Wairarapa plain, Masterton is a rural township
surrounded by farmland and popular with hobby
farmers, lifestylers and holiday makers.
We foresee the Wairarapa as a major centre in
NZ alpaca farming, combining the country lifestyle with
close, easy access to Wellington which is only 50k
south. Lifestyle blocks here are easily obtainable
with a choice of hill country or flat terrain and a
moderate climate. Many hobby farmers choose to
commute to Wellington thus combining all the
advantages of a country lifestyle and city careers.
People who choose this lifestyle will find alpacas
perfectly suited to their farmlets because they are
extremely easy to care for by people without a
farming background and there is a great local
support network for training in how to handle and
care for these delightful animals. Because they
have an extremely efficient digestive system,
taking full advantage of available nutrition they can
be stocked at a higher rate than sheep, making
them viable for even the smallest block of land .
To find The Alpaca Place:
From Masterton, head north on Opaki Rd (SH 2), turn right at the Mauriceville sign (about 7 km north of Masterton - Kaipororo Rd), then take the first right - this is Bluff Rangitumau Rd, follow the road round the bluff and back onto the flat, - we are about 1.5 km past the single lane bridge, at number 365 (on the left - formerly 9D, both numbers are on the letterbox) See Map below.
Alternatively, from the South, you can take the Heavy Traffic Bypass, turn right into Loop Line (at the Mauriceville sign), drive to the end and turn left into SH2, then next right into Kaipororo Rd, (also signposted Mauriceville), then right into Bluff-Rangitumau Rd.
From the North, do not turn into the Heavy Traffic Bypass, continue on down SH 2, until you reach the Mauriceville sign and turn left into Kaipororo Rd, then right into Bluff Rangitumau. Hint: there is a turn off to Mauriceville just south of Eketahuna - do not take this route - it will get your here, but will take a lot longer! Continue down SH2 to the large green sign to Mauriceville
