..:: Profile: Purrembete Highlander::..
Purrumbete Highlander was renowned for his ability
as a sire and a grandsire to produce quality
descendants displaying both fleece and
conformation excellence. He is considered one of
the "top 5" foundation sires of the Australasian
Alpaca Industry, and the inclusion of his name in any
pedigree immediately attracts attention.
Highlander, a full Accoyo from Don Barreda’s
famous Peruvian herd, arrived in Australia in 1990
as working male and at his death, more than a decade later, was
assumed to be about 14 years old.
Highlander had a profound
influence on the breeding of
high quality alpacas. The mark
of a great sire is not just what
he produces but the number of
significant sires that he fathers.
Highlander was renowned for
his ability as a sire and a
grandsire to produce quality descendants displaying
both fleece and conformation excellence.
Highlander’s influence becomes even more apparent
when we look at his sons. For example Purrembete
Brigantine, Purrembete Minderoo, and Parnabrae
Brutus, just 3 of Highlander’s many sons, have all been
champions in their own right as well as siring many
champions themselves. Many of Highlander’s
progeny have excelled in the show ring.
Eleven years after his arrival in Australia,
Highlander still had fibre statistics that were far
superior to the Australian herd average.
