Alpaca Association National Show

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

Held this year in Tauranga from 30 September to 2 October, the National Expo showcases the best of the alpaca industry in New Zealand – of course we’ll be there! Gordon is staying home to care for our alpacas (and the cats!), while Liz and I head north with 7 young alpacas to compete in New Zealands premier show. Most of our super seven are black, we have 3 young black males in the same class, so will be providing a bit of competition for ourselves, plus black junior and black intermediate females. Just to remind everyone our colour selection covers the full spectrum of colours, we have also entered a junior white female and a junior fawn male.

This should be a great weekend for all things alpaca, there are stalls and demonstrations during the weekend, for more information check the Alpaca Association website www.alpaca.org.nz. We’d love to meet you, so if you come along, look us up – our pens will have our name on it, and when we are not competing we usually wear caps/seatshirts with our logo on.

Spring Fertilizer

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

I’ve been busy fertilising our spring pasture with Fish Fertiliser and blood & bone.  One of the interesting claims by the producers of the fish fertiliser is that it suppresses fungal growth.  While no claim is made specifically around facial eczema spores we are hoping using this particular fertilizer will be another helpful aid in reducing the chances of our alpacas picking up this condition.  In any event it adds a multitude of core minerals to the pasture so should be good food for the grasses.
