DNA Parent Verified

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2015

The Alpaca Place recently made a commitment to have a DNA Parent Verified herd. To this end, all alpacas in our herd have now had their DNA scientifically tested, and where DNA was available for both parents, to have the alpaca Parent Verified using DNA testing. This process should be completed by the end of April 2015. DNA Parent Verification is supported by the Alpaca Association of NZ, and registered alpacas who have been parent verified, have this icon appearing on their pedigrees.

Farm Maintenance

Wednesday, April 1st, 2015

The dish drains have been dug, the fields fertilised and limed, and new grass seed drilled in.  We’ve had a few short spells of rain and hopefully in the next few weeks we’ll see the new grass starting to grow.  The alpacas won’t be able to eat the tasty new pasture until spring so will be confined to fewer paddocks over winter, and some will be wintering off site so they are still well fed.  They’ll no doubt be asking to go into the new pasture – they’ll assemble at the gate and look longingly at the unavailable grazing: “the grass in the next paddock is greener”.
