Sad News

Thursday, February 25th, 2016

Our eagerly awaited cria, the first sired by Marconi, and from our top black female, NightShade was still born this morning. A sad loss, both for our mourning mother, and for us.

In the past we have managed to save many cria against the odds, but sadly this one was not to be.

Show Success

Sunday, February 21st, 2016

Masterton A&P Show held its 5th Alpaca Show on Saturday, and what a great day it was for us! We took 7 alpacas to the show, and they all came home with ribbons. And our 4 fleece entries also did well, with 2 2nd placings and 2 firsts, two championships (NZ Eikon Topaz II (White) and NZ Eikon Charisma (Light Fawn) and the best result of the show for us – Supreme Huacaya fleece won by Liz’s NZ Eikon Charisma.

The Alpaca Place won 3 of the available 6 breed championships, while our stud, Highway Star Gold Flash sired the brown champion as well. NZ Eikon Topaz won White Champion, Huari Sculptor’s Image took Light Fawn Champion, and Black Jack BT Lord Shachor was Black Champion. In addition our NZ Eikon Charisma and Sierra Vista Ma Chere were Reserve Champions respectively in the Light Fawn and White Championships.

Not so glamorous, but still important were the first placings won by NZ Eikon Crusader’s Envoy (White Intermediate Male) and NZ Eikon Chico (Junior Grey Male).

Just news….

Thursday, February 18th, 2016

Quintessence, aka Essie, gave birth to a lively male cria last week. This cria has some impressive ancestry, so we will watch his development with interest. Provisionally named Quinn (for his mother and grandfather, Forest Glen Tarquin), he is sparkling white, so needs some protection from our hot summer sun, including sunblock on his delicate pink nose.

This week also saw us add to our “memories” by having some aerial photos taken of The Alpaca Place – this was a spontaneous decision when the photographer made a “cold call” on Tuesday, and we took advantage of the opportunity. The photos were taken by a very silent drone, and we received about 60, so will have plenty to choose from if we decide to frame one in the future.Quinn 1 day 12.2.16

More drama….

Wednesday, December 16th, 2015

This time involving rescuing an alpaca who had fallen down a bank into the river – you can read all about it on our facebook page.

Dramatic delivery!

Friday, December 4th, 2015

Wednesday saw the first caesarean section performed on one of our alpacas since we started breeding 15 years ago. With nearly 160 cria births, this is only the 3rd time we have needed veterinary intervention.

Cria Gold!

Tuesday, November 10th, 2015

This is a great week for us, with Copper to Gold giving birth to a lively, medium fawn female. She is enormous – weighing in at 10.3kg – not quite the biggest cria we have ever had, but she comes a close second! Already she towers over the premature boy born 9 days earlier – you might like to compare the videos to see the differences between a premature and a full term cria. We are delighted she is a fawn like her mother, and in the tradition of her maternal ancestors, she has a “gold” name – in honour of her stunning pedigree which feature all the “iconic 5 studs” plus many others, she has been named Classic Gold.

Manawatu Show success

Monday, November 9th, 2015

The Manawatu A&P Show was our 2nd show for the season, and  a very succesful show it was for us,too. We entered 5 alpacas and everyone came home with a ribbon, including 3 firsts (Charisma, Envoy, Sculptors Image), a 2nd placing (Chico), and a 4th (Topaz II). We also had 3 fleeces entered, Charisma, Envoy and Frosted Elegance, and all won 1st placings, plus Frosted Elegance picked up the Champion Grey Fleece award. But the real star of the show for us, was Charisma, who not only was Champion Intermediate Female and Champion Light Fawn, but completed the hat-trick taking Champion Junior Fleece and Champion Light Fawn fleece – a total package that is not often won by one animal at the same Show. This follows the success these 3 fleeces had at the AANZ National Show earlier this year.

Premature cria

Sunday, November 1st, 2015

Our 2nd cria for the season was born yesterday, about a week premature. We gave him milk and glucose for added strength until he was able to stand and feed for himself, and kept him inside overnight, returning his mother and him to the “maternity herd” this morning – where he got mobbed by curious females!

Welcome to Zoe’s cria

Tuesday, September 29th, 2015

The first of our spring cria has arrived with a male cria from Zoe. Due in mid-August, he made up for his late arrival on 27 September, with a birth weight of 8.5 kg. A tall cria, he already has a strong look of his sire, Paxakusi Celtic Prince. He appears to be white, but could possibly be light fawn, and is already showing evidence of a dense, crimpy fleece.
