What a Bonus!

Sunday, March 25th, 2012

The big surprise of the year was when our champion black female, NightShade, gave birth to a black male cria. What’s so surprising about that, I hear you ask!  The surprise is in the fact that the cria (now named KingMaker) is sired by our medium fawn stud Forestglen Lion Heart. Lion Heart is descended from Purrumbete Highlander (who threw a few black cria), but it is 3-4 generations back, and the chances of Lion Heart himself carrying black was so slim as to be almost discounted. So we expected a fawn or brown cria!

Knowing Lion Heart carries black is a huge boost to our black herd, as it means we can introduce all the famous studs such as Highlander, Inti, El Dorado, and one of the few famous female alpacas, Purrumbete Sweet Freedom. Along with the famous names, Lion Heart has a reputation of producing fine fleece cria with lots of crimp.

KingMaker then has the best of white/fawn and black heritage, as NightShade, sired by our own Pejo Rebel, has the best of blacks in her heritage- Coonawarra Dorchester and his sire Coonawarra Julius, plus Somerset Peruvian Black Reign. Watching him grow into his potential is going to be so exciting!
